I really enjoyed hanging out with you, Big Llou, Jaye and James at the Voice 2010 banquet. I admire and respect that you live your beliefs and do more than talk the talk.
I hope we get the opportunity to work together sometime soon. Mentoring isn't just a guy thing, ya know. Rooting for your series...!
Take care,
Linda (VU 2K) :-)
you're a amazing talent.

I haven't used the Avalon but one time so I'm a bit rusty!
The Equalizer section is the area that gives most people trouble. If you don't want to use it, leave the button marked EQ unpressed (unlit) and that will take the EQ out of the signal chain. If you decide to use it (sparingly), note that the button marked "Hi Q"
changes the bell curve for the two mid eq's ONLY. That basically means that it changes the shape of the equalization and your ears are the only thing that will decide if you like to use it or not. The other button "Frequency" multiplies the frequency (again for the two mids only) by a factor of 10. That would change a frequency of 35hz thu 450hz to 350hz to 4500hz! I personally don't like to use eq while recording, but of course, let your ears be the judge and use sparingly. The button marked SC mids (scoop mids) is a fixed curve that softens the mid section and you will want to experiment with that a little since it's just a matter of pushing a button.
For the preamp and compressor section:
+set the input to mic
+Don not use the high gain button yet, experiment with it off
+activate the +48V phantom button MAKING CERTAIN BOTH GAINS ARE LOWEST
+filter button "in" set high pass to about 80hz (you may decide not to use this)
+let the unit warm up for at least 15 mins (tubes after all)
+set input gain (preamp side) to about 2-3 o'clock
+push compressor button "in"
+set attack to fast
+release to medium/fast
+threshold to about -15 to -20 db
+ratio to about 3-4
Setting the input gain high saturates the tube and provides a fatter, thicker sound. More input, less output gain saturates the tube, less input, more output gives a cleaner, less tubey sound.
Obviously you want to set the output gain to give a good level without clipping or distorting.
That's about it for right now...good luck and I'm sure that with your pipes, you shouldn't have any trouble sounding like a million bucks.
Later friend,
Youssef
