"Thanks for your advice on the NTG-3, Mike! I still have not pulled the trigger, so your advice is still timely. It's still between the 416, NTG-3, or a Sanken CS-1. I'm not in a hurry at this point, looking at 2010 for this purchase. BTW, I noticed…"

"Hey Mike,

How do you like your Rode NTG-3 vs the 416? I'm in the market for something like this. (Already have a TLM-103, Rode NTK w Amperex NOS tube and Shure SM-7B). I'd love to hear your thoughts.

All the best,
Tom Test"

"I booked this gig through Lily's Talent in Chicago. But companies sometimes have different ad agencies for radio vs TV. At the very least, they have different teams of creatives from the same agency, who might do things their own way, e.g., work…"

"I'm exclusive with Lori for all of WI, and love them dearly. But they are more strict than some talent agents about contact with the client. So do be careful not to do anything you think they might frown upon if they knew you were doing it. They're…"

"How'd you find me, Craig? I've heard some TWC-BC spots on the radio, I wonder if I heard you! Did you ask the agency folks for a copy? It often takes "polite persistence....""

  • Hiya Tom,

I have no doubt that the talent on there says the 416 "cuts through" better than the NTG-3. I think that the NTG-3 will also "cut through" a mix quite well. There's a TINY little bit of difference between the natural eq curve of the 416 and the NTG...but I have no reason to believe that it doesn't make the NTG cut through better or worse. If you look at the technical specs of each...the pattern on the 416 is a touch tighter than that of the NTG. THAT makes it a smidge punchier, but, when all is said and done, I just don't think there's that much difference.

And honestly, if you're doing voice on a spot, it'll be the engineer who is putting the spot together that will make the voice "cut through" on the mix.
  • Tom...I'm SO sorry. I haven't checked my comment section in a VERY long time, and just noticed that you had asked my opinion on the NTG-3 vs. 416...like, in May or something. I don't know if you ever picked one up, but the NTG-3, in my opinion, is very, VERY similar in most ways to the 416. For my ear, and so far, my clients' ears, it seems that the only difference is about $600. : )

Hope that helps. There's a great shootout of the two mics on youtube actually

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FbzNgmrCBQs

This shows the way the two mics work as far as sonic quality and their rejection capabilities.
  • Thanks for the advice Tom,

LOL! if only I had as much time as I used to. I've been promising folks to get a page on VU for months, but only today had the free time and wherewithal to actually do it.

Busy is a good thing, but does make life more complicated...

  • Were you the other guy from Loris that worked on that spot. I heard there was someone else from the agency. I've just been with them since late June 2008. Felt good to book a gig with them rather quickly. I've have one other agent that dang for all the parts I thought I nailed...well the nail bent before it went all the way in.
  • Tom,

Thanks for the input. The agent I'm talking about is Lori Lins LTD in Milwaukee.

I may try and contact the engineer since I recorded on spot in Minneapolis and see if he has anything. We hit it off fairly well.

    Thanks for the tip,
    Craig
  • Hey Tom,

I saw it in print somewhere on this site. I don't remember now though. I talked with my agent and they said they did not want me contacting the creative or the agency directly, so I guess I will have to wait.

Nice demo and very unique website. Well done! Keep in touch.
