You can find any number of great ( and also mediocre ) recording interfaces. Almost any will work with a DBX, since it outputs line level.
Check out the Focusrite Scarlett series...they're lovely. You can also look at an number of USB…"

EQ and Compression can be fickle, and funny mistresses. It's probably not a bad idea to learn a bit more about them. If you want to hear the difference in treated versus untreated files, I can send you a little primer.

As for the…"

"Hiya Rob,

Sorry about that on the M49...it's a nice mic, it really is...but to be honest, I don't think you'd be finding any radical difference between it and your TLM 103. It's a bigger capsule, and it does have a bit more "depth" to it, but I…"

"Howdy,

No problem at all, anytime.

As for the reasons between a 416 or a Neumann...there's no hard and fast reason to use one over the other. Most people I think tend to like large diaphragm microphones ( like your Neumann ) for more "acting"…"

"Hi Alexis,

I've talked on all the mentioned Neumann mics, and for my money, I'd go with the 102. It's small, but don't let that fool you...it's a nice, big sounding mic. Very similar I think to the 103. I use one in my secondary studio, and really…"

I had a similar experience with Verizon in Brooklyn, NY. They claimed they didn't support the technology anymore. I wound up contacting Dave Immer at Digifon.

"The NTG-3 and the 416 have very similar pickup patterns. The 416 is somewhat "tighter" and therefore in theory rejects more unwanted noise or material. But, the NTG-3 isn't THAT much wider. They're really quite strikingly similar. The nice thing is,…"

"Stephanie,

I have both the 416 and the NTG-3...and had the NTG-2 for a little bit. If you can swing it, spend the extra bucks and pick up the NTG-3. There's negligible sonic difference between the 416 and the NTG-3...and it is very user friendly.…"

"No problem...

If you're mixing in headphones, and I don't recommend it unless you have to, the K240s are really, REALLY good for that.

The 7506 cans will bleed, but you have to have 'em CRANKED to make that happen...so, hopefully your ears are…"

"Dan, I have several pairs of the Sony 7506 headphones...have been using them for years and years...most studios I go into have them, or the AKG K240 (but I don't see them as often ). Both are excellent in terms of sound reproduction. The K240s are…"

"Ed,

Just taking a peek at the tech docs for the 003 family, and it looks like the SPDIF I/O can handle 96k/24bit audio...that should be a bit of good news. 003 Racks have been going pretty cheap lately...well, relatively cheap anyway.

Good luck!…"

  • I would appreciate a primer on EQ

Thanks so much for sharing your insights.

  • Thank you for your thorough response. Your comments are very helpful.

I am thinking that to get the most out of the 103, I need to understand EQ and maybe compression a better, rather than trying to buy more expensive mics.

But let me ask you, when you finally got the U87 was it worth it?

Thanks again for taking the time to answer Alexis and I really appreciate it.

  • Hi,
This Alexis's dad Rob. Thanks for writing back.
I was thinking of replacing my TLM103 with a 49, and I wanted your thoughts.  I was in a rush because there was a sale yesterday at Guitar Center. The only unit they had was dented and scratched so I passed.
Also I noticed you use a Rode NTG3, I was thinking about that as well and wanted to see what you thought of it.
    Thank you.
    Robert (Alexis' dad)
  • Mike: Read your post on technotes. Need your personal email to write you off this board. I work in Europe too and on April 5 night I do a webinar through Voiceoverxtra, part of the series on me they sponsor, with subject "Working Worldwide." I want to talk with you and would like to quote you in my webinar. ISDN in hotel rooms? Amsterdam! I have not been there altho extensive European and S. American experiences. Let's communicate. btzol@aol.com-- www.voicesvoices.com
  • Thanks for your advice on the NTG-3, Mike! I still have not pulled the trigger, so your advice is still timely. It's still between the 416, NTG-3, or a Sanken CS-1. I'm not in a hurry at this point, looking at 2010 for this purchase. BTW, I noticed in the comments section of the youtube vid that one VO claimed that the 416 "cuts through" a lot better than the NTG-3. I'm not sure I agree from hearing the raw video, I wonder how they'd sound behind music. The main reason I'm considering a shotgun type mic is for the ability to cut through a mix.

FYI, I just bought a Studio Projects CS5 for about $325, and so far I'm loving it. Another talent I respect says that he recently recorded on a CS5 from his home studio to update a tag he recorded for Disney, and it perfectly matched the U87 that was originally used. I also am getting in a Mike Joly-modded MXL 909 any day now that I am very curious to check out.

Anyhow, thanks for your reply, Mike! It definitely was not too late.

    All the best,
    Tom Test
  • Hey Mike,

How do you like your Rode NTG-3 vs the 416? I'm in the market for something like this. (Already have a TLM-103, Rode NTK w Amperex NOS tube and Shure SM-7B). I'd love to hear your thoughts.

    All the best,
    Tom Test
