  • Hey John,

Thanks for watching my video. Please stay in touch.
  • Hey JMH,

    What's up?

Haven't heard from YOU in a while.

The Japan gig is still on. 2 weeks from now. They just ran late.

Hope you and your family are well.

  • John-
If you've done any paying gigs (provided they fall into the niche you're trying to establish), you might be able to get copies of the spots and edit them into a short demo along with one or two of your old demo cuts. That's how I started. The field is competitive for sure, which makes you want to pay big bucks to create a demo. But you definitely are still riding the learning curve and you want to have your chops together before you do that. All the production values in the world can't save a bad read or interpretation. :-)
For having just stepped in front of a mic for the first time in February, I was impressed. You'll be a quick learner!
  • Hey John -

Got a chance to listen to your demos. I actually liked your narration demo better than your commercial one. Not that your commercial one was bad, but it had a very similar feel throughout. You have a wonderful quality to your voice, but you might want to experiment with bringing out the different shades and tones rather than relying all the time on the smoky, slightly gravelly thing you got goin' on. (I'm speaking here as a fellow smoky, gravelly kinda gal).
You could easily smooth it out and get one sound, then rough it up a bit with a little projection and attitude and get a Chevy truck kinda thing. Try playing around with stuff like that.

Interestingly, your voice works great with narrative copy. I think perhaps it's because you're not "selling" something, you're telling a story. And that's when your natural qualities of honesty and trust get to shine.

Lastly, I will say to you - do something with your website!! You can do a basic web template yourself these days... doesn't have to be anything fancy, but it does have to look like you aren't holding up a cardboard sign. :-)

    Hope this helps!
  • BTW, John.

  • John,

Looks like I will be leaving next weekend.

Got the passport updated, but waiting on them to get the transportation and accomodations down. They had a 7.6 earthquake this week, followed by a typhoon, so it probably wasn't the optimal time to go anyway. Still a sure bet, though.
  • Hey, John -
Thanks for swinging by my site and leaving those birthday wishes! Nice to hear you are pursuing your VO dream. Go for it, dude!
P.S. Barry is right. you are squinting in your photo. :-)
  • Excellent John! Congrats!
  • BTW, you're sqinting in your picture. Use a different picture, dude. Open your f'ing eyes.
