"Based on the issues I heard in your Dad's audio sample he sent me, I am not sure that Ed's suggestion will make a noticeable difference. I still find Skype to be the best sounding and cost effective method to do a "phone patch" currently available.…"

"Soundforge is my favorite for voice-over actors on Windows. Fast to learn, powerful effects, easy interface.

As for Source Connect, read this."

"Twistedwave is like Sound Forge for a Mac, but easier to use and a better interface. Audacity can work but has some annoying user interface quirks and bugs."

"Dan, the app doesn't determine the sound quality, the mic does. Right now there's only one viable way to connect a studio mic to an iPhone.
Read my blog post to learn more and hear my audio sample."

"Yes, both ends need to have SC to use it, or you use an ISDN bridge to connect to studios that only have ISDN. The Autohybrid is one I've installed in many studios. You aren't going to do much better until you go to a digital hybrid, over $500 unit.…"

"You don't need a preamp separate from the one built into the Onyx 820i, the internal one is quite good. You've got a good start with that unit, it's one of my favorites.

"Send me a clip of what you're getting from your NT1a, I'll help you determine if it is really a mic you need, or room acoustic treatment, or better mic placement.

"The Rode NTG3 is an excellent alternative to the 416, many are finding them a very good substitute. You'll save $500 and be quite happy with the results."

"You'll be recording the Mic track (dry) and the Effects track (wet), so you have both versions. If you must use effects for some reason, this is the fast way to get it done in Pro Tools, and allows you to monitor yourself through the effects (but…"

  • Did you use the Mixer panel in Maestro with the sliders for input one and two? The panel that has three tabs: Input, Output, Mixer
Not the one that mirrors the dial on the front of unit...
  • Also...I can listen to itunes through Maestro and control volume levels to headphones and monitors by the dial/knob on Duet....but the "listening" ability simply vanishes when I open Twisted Wave to use my microphone. Total silence when I OPEN Twisted Wave or even hit "record"...still nothing in the headphones while I am recording. It IS THERE..I can see the wave form recording and it will playback IN THE HEADPHONES AFTER I record...this is driving me crazy!!
  • Yes...I have Maestro working just fine....I keep trying to check different boxes on the "input / output" selection in Maestro. I don't know what I am overlooking.
  • George,
Thanks for your comments regarding my Apogee Duet....
    QUESTION:
I can't "hear" the mic through my headphones or monitors and it is driving me nuts! I am using the Twisted Wave program..after reading the suggestion from Beau. I know it will be great once LEARN IT. Here is the order of things: Rode K2 mic>Apogee Duet>Macbook Pro Twisted Wave software>??? When I open Twisted Wave...I can SEE the signal on the "recording level/meter"....but I HEAR nothing in the headphones or monitor.??? It records my audio to Twisted Wave with no problem...but the only way to hear what I have recorded is during playback???? I simply CAN'T hear the mic to set levels etc...ANY IDEAS??? Thanks
  • Hi George,
I got a nice email from Paul Pape regarding my recent podcast and he mentioned he heard it on your site... Wow, that was very kind of you to post it.
I hope all is well with you. Also, I really appreciate the homage to DLF on your site.

    Best regards,

    David
