I WORK IN THE VOICE OVER INDUSTRY AS A(N)
Voice Actor, Copy Writer, Studio Engineer, Creative Director, Voiceover Coach
HERE'S A LITTLE ABOUT ME AND MY VOICE OVER EXPERIENCE
Over 30 years in radio and recording studio owner, both audio and video. I am British but living in Bahrain which is sort of similar to Dubai and very near so indeed quite a bit of work goes that way. Pretty much a respected name within the industry, certainly around these parts but almost daily I (ISDN) link to the UK and US studio to studio, using other professionals for my own productions. Boastful maybe, but considered perhaps a little 'old school' whereby my voiceovers and the ones I direct/produce have to be perfectly delivered with flow, balanced, natural and solid equality. A sort of hypocrisy I live with is the sound of my own voice, since you cannot mistake it, but as long as the spoken word is clear and precise, accents are fine, dialects dodgy, unless specifically required. Strong dialects detract from the content as listeners latch on to that and not what the voice is saying. (But of course, a good VO can self hear every nuance and syllable uttered through their mouth, or should be able to, thus deliver perfection). Another reason others say they prefer to work with me. 'He knows what he wants' is the general comment.
RECENTLY BOOKED PROJECTS
Continuously/daily often 24/7 on some jobs, which include radio spots, video docs etc. Most are direct clients, but I happily allow selected agencies to use the facility in a rather unique way; through experience, they generally leave it all to me. Much of my very heavy work nowadays is in communications. My company has long term contracts with a major telecommunications player across 12 countries. (Although with buy outs and mergers, that goes up and down like a bronco). We design, record and periodically even voice complete and intense systems which often take months to develop all the way to final polish and launch - and I mean polished, whichever language. My team also manage some systems and it is a belief within that few in the world can actually match the quality and consistency produced here and that includes technically. Using tried and tested but secret algorithms and system techniques which others either care little about or show no concern at all, it is strikingly obvious which systems are produced here. Having said that, we are definitely more expensive that most quotes you'll get.
English - but It matters not what the language is from a production point of view as It is all in the direction and the voice talent's ability. More than 80% of my work over the years has been primarily in Arabic with English sometimes taking a back seat. Hindi, Urdu and other Asian languages feature a great deal as well. This surprises many as I cannot speak these other languages, merely a smattering of bits and pieces, but I have an ability to focus on and often memorize the elements needed. Notably, my productions in the various tongues are just as good as the English and considerably better than most local producers can achieve themselves, since as mentioned above, it is all in the 'direction'.
You love it or you hate it, but you cannot copy it. A rather unique, voice with grit is how I am described in media and on my web site, however, my range is extremely flexible. Because of the apparent bass element, the voice is often compared to those doing movie trailers and so on, so station I.D.s are a norm. But I can do uptempo sales, sweet love jobs and docos well too. This movie and station ID bit It is actually a client misconception; whereby they hear the smooth flow doing such aggressive type spots, compared to so many out there trying to emulate this type of read, these clients often think this is all I do.
