"Hi Cat -

What you're experiencing is 'latency' - the way to get rid of it, or at least reduce it, is to make your recording buffer smaller.

I don't use Audicity, so I don't know specifically where it is, but I'd guess that somewhere in…"

"Hey Alexis - the RNC is a solid piece - or, as they like to say, "really nice." Should definitely solve any issues."

"Hey Byron - I'll try with a laptop, that's the easiest option. I can also do the UPS with little fuss, so there's another experiment.

IF it turned out to be RFI (sound serious!), what the heck would I do to nix that?"

"Hi Joe -
I'd say it happens no more than once every 30 seconds, but that's frequent enough if recording an audiobook.

I've done the whole "restart, kill background apps" process to little avail. MBOX (USB) vs. 002 (FW400), still had the problem.…"

Just to add a little comfort and insurance for the future, make sure you have a complete backup of your hard drive. Whether you use Time Machine - or my personal favorite, SuperDuper! - you'll save yourself a whole lot of hurt if you…"

"Hey Victoria -

You'll want to do it in the exact opposite order. Your coach/producer/director is your primary choice, and they usually have an engineer and/or studio where they prefer to work, so that takes care of the studio question."

"Just to clarify: my comment was solely about dialing out of the DH20 while having what I assume is a non-Skype VOIP setup (Vonage, Ooma, Time-Warner, etc.); nothing to do with eliminating hum."

"Hey Alexis,

Might have an extremely easy and cheap solution for you. I use VOIP here for Phone Patch (Ooma) with no problems, using a JK Audio Inline Patch. Looking at the DH20, I think what works for me should work for you.

The trick is to use a…"

Thanks. Digi 002 had the same specs, so I opted that direction. Cheaper and I hear some rumblings of many preferring it to the 003. To each their own in the end, though.

"Could use a little assistance...

"Was thinking the same thing, Joe - is it possibly a ground-loop issue?

Alexis, make sure y'all try plugging the patch into an outlet NOT connected to your Pre-Amp/Computer. That may clear out the hum immediately."

  • Hey Ed what's up? Just thought I'd pop in and say heya. I'd like to get over to Talkshop soon and check it out. Take care man....

    Best Regards,

  • Congrats on the Ben 10 spot....nice job!
  • Hi Ed,
Thank you for the considerate offer. I've pretty well determined that whatever is going on with this iMac conflict is a software, read that "driver" issue, rather than a hardware problem. That thinking comes from some posts on the Tech Blog here @ VU that got my attention. For example, yesterday I was listening to audiobook samples at the iTunes store. Checked out maybe 8-10 samples...no problem. Closed iTunes and did something else. About an hour later I went to a web page to listen to some post, and no audio. In this case I didn't get the beachball, so I could re-start the iMac, return to the web page and listen. If I got the beachball, it's Power off, etc.

I need to better understand audio "drivers" so I can resolve(possibly) these issues.

Anyway, I do hope to meet sometime as we're neighbors and we're both in VO and it's always good to keep connected in this biz in this town.

If you have any insight re: audio drivers please pass them along.

    Tom
  • Hi Ed,
Thanx for the "strip silence" recommendation, I knew nothing about it. I have been picking my way thru the ProTools PDF and still, there's so much. I don't understand tweaking the db, but I'll add it to my list. Recently I tried working with both EQ and Compression, and the results were pretty awful.

Although Harlan Hogan sez send "clean" tracks, I'd still like to be able tweak my submissions a little bit, don't you think.

    Thank you again,
    Tom Dolan
ps// if you ever need some info re: Japan, ask! I lived there 10 years and my wife is there visiting her family as I write.

  • After months and months of research, was going to pull the trigger on the M-2 at Mercenary Audio out of Boston, but figured I'd give old craigslist a try first.

Sure enough, someone 20 minutes away was selling their studio and had the exact John Hard M-2 configuration I wanted. Brought some mics to test it and WOW is all I can say; basically brand new, rugged as hell, sounds frakkin' amazing, and about half list!
  • Hey Ed,
A BIG congrat's again on those nuptials.. She got an outstanding guy and I'm sure you did the very same!! We wish you both nothing but the best. I'll let you know how the regional thang goes with the coach.. CYA soon,

    Bob
  • NICE!
I dig the M-2. It's similar to my RNP, just an ugly little box that gives a clean HOT signal.
    Where'd you pick it up?

LOL Talkshop? What were they running there?
  • Thanks for the vote of confidence on the narration classes, Ed. Greatly appreciated! See you again soon.
