You asked a very involved, layered question.  Usually when someone asks a question like this it means they aren't demo ready.  Plus, I…"

"Hey Noah! What part of the country are you in? My LA 8 week workshop has about a 2 year waiting list. But I do weekend workshops around the country. Got some planned for 2011 in St. Louis and Atlanta.

"Hi Victoria!

Sorry it took me so long to get back. Been on vacation.

I say the best way to find a studio and (or) producer for your demo is to ask fellow VO actors. Listen to demos, either from friends online or voicebank.net. Listen to voicebank…"

"Hi Cia!

I myself don't do any warmups. But that's just me. Everyone needs to do what works for them. For me, just reading the copy is warm up enough.

Now, back to your question. Depending on how effected my voice was with the cold, I might pass on…"

This is a job for Pat Fraley! He's one of the best when it comes to audio books. I myself don't do em. Wish I could be of more assistance!

"Hi Cindy!

Boy, I don't think I'm the best one to help ya here. It sounds like you are working non union, and being that I'm a union actor I have both SAG and AFTRA to go after unfair producers who don't pay. It rarely if ever happens. Now, I know…"

"Hey Scott!

It is indeed a bad idea to have your picture anywhere near your VO marketing. They will judge your voice by your looks. Now, I know there are many of us (myself included) who have our pictures within our websites. Well, I'm into this for…"

  • Hi all!

  • Hey Bob:
It was nice to meet you at VOICE 2008. I very much enjoyed your panel and presentation. You are the man! :) Great work!
  • Bob,
Been looking at turning the radio-on-stage production into an event for someplace on the West Side of LA, using VO talent. Keep up the great work, and I look forward to meeting you in the future.
    Best Regards,
    Jason
  • Bob,

You move too fast! Catch you on the next go round in LA!

  • Hey Bob Guy!
Wow you're "johnny on the spot" with your speedy replies!!! I can't thank you enough. I will take your advice and hopefully one day I'll be able to repay you, even if it's just a beer or a cup of coffee, if nothing else. I am going to look into acting/vo classes like you suggested. What was your opinion on the "Grillpack" spot by the way?

Be forewarned, I will be coming back frequently, to the VO well of knowledge, or as I like to call him......Bob.

  • Very nice Bob! See you around the universe.
  • Thanks, Dave!

Much appreciated! I was on the audience side of the panel for many years, and I just asked the questions I would have had if I were pursuing da biz today. Plus, I get asked oodles of questions myself via email and here on VO Universe, so I just asked the stuff folks want to know. I just wish we'd had more time on the panel, as there was so much more info to be shared.

    ;-)
  • Bob,
I couldn't seem to catch up to you after the panel you moderated Saturday at VOICE 2008. I wanted to tell you what a masterful job you did of asking EVERY SINGLE QUESTION all of us in the audience WANTED to ask. Bravo! You're the best!

  • So you don't have to listen to the whole demo again, the unicel and autism spots are back to back and they start right around the 2:05 mark.
    THKS Again!
  • Bob,
1st off, sorry it's taken so long to comment back, sometimes I don't get online for days at a time.

Thanks for taking the time to listen to my demo and thanks for the advice. Funny thing is, everything you said I completely agree with, I just don't know how to find "Heath's brand". The cuts on my demo where I'm doing my take on Don or Rod Serling were for clients, that's what they wanted. But I should still stay away from including those "copycat vo's" in my demo? I see your point.

If you can listen to the demo again and tell me if I should include the "autism" vo and the "unicell" vo on my new demo. Of all the stuff on that demo those 2 are probably where you hear "Heath". The reason I say that is because my son has autism, and I wrote that PSA for school, so the subject really hits home, and the unicell one I WASN'T trying to channel my uncle.

Also, I just uploaded my latest spot I did for a local client, it airs during the Minnesota Twins radio broadcast (on AM), it's titled "Grillpack" let me know what you think of that one and if I should include that in the new demo.

Thanks again for taking the time to help... I really appreciate it.

    TTFN
    Heath
