  • Hmmm ... I see what you're saying ... I have a 2 week trial period with the mic, so maybe I should send it back and get one that's not USB?

  • i got an A620USB, large diaphragm condenser mic...
  • Thanks for the add, Al!
  • Al, I just noticed your comment--I must check in more often. Well, I'm running an MKH-416 via an Avalon M5 straight into Pro Tools HD. I'm in the middle of moving Mac and 192 Interface (noisy!) into a different room, where I'll control them via Ethernet-based Gefen extenders. My purpose is to achieve--finally--a clean sound with no room noise. I'd love to never use a gate! I have more absorption stuff to build for the booth, too, but it's not too bad now. Plug-ins! I love 'em. Many clients, as Melanie mentioned, want no processing whatever. Just Mic/Preamp/Zephyr. That being said, when I get to play & maybe produce something, there are many fun plugs. I use the Waves Renaissance Compressor and Ren Eq on most sessions, with crazed special effects from Soundtoys plugins like Echoboy and Timeblender, reverb from Digi or TC Megaverb, and I love VariFi, which can speed up or slow down a region, grinding it to a stop. (Good for radio imaging.) Then, on the master fader, either McDSP MC4000 or just Waves L1 Ultramaximizer. As to whether these toys earn their keep, probably not. If I were starting over I'd just use a cheap MBox and ProTools native on an iMac. My big TDM system is expensive overkill. Good to talk to ya! PC
  • Al, apologies for the long overdue reply on home studio plug-ins. My sound chain is Neumann U-67, into an Avalon 737SP, into a Mackie Onyx console, then an MBox 2 Pro. The Avalon does the relatively heavy lifting, but I count heavily on a smooth, almost invisible gate in the Trackplug plug in by Wave Arts.
  • Hey Al!
Thanks for the add. & congrats on getting the 416!! That is tops on my list of new mics!
  • Congrats on your acquisition, Al! I'd say it's probably best to use as little processing a possible. In fact, several of my clients request no processing at all..... However, normally, I like to use a bit of the noise gate. You really have to play with it and listen to get your best settings. I have the Threshold and the ratio set at about 10 'clock position. Almost no compression, drive at about #2 setting, and density at a little less that #1. De-esser, Frequency, about 3K, and threshold at 5. For a male voice, you're going to want different settings than mine. For example, I have the Low Frequency enhancer totally down. Every now and then I play with the settings, especially when I introduce a new piece of equipment into the mix. Do you have the manual? I have a PDF version I could send you if you'd like.
