  • I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving holiday. We spent a week of vacation in California. First L.A. for a few days and then the remainder in San Diego. Had a fantastic and very relaxing time, although we were busy every day. Now I'm ready and raring to get back to work and I'm thrilled to say I came home to three emails from previous clients requesting me to audition. One for corporate training and another for videogame characters. Wish me luck!!!!!!

Penny, I'm sorry I didn't manage to come see you. We arrived in San Diego late Tuesday night and visited the zoo all day Wednesday. I called your office and left a message. I hope you had a great Thanksgiving and I look forward to giving you a hello hug next June instead.

Aaron - - reading to kids is one of the best jobs in the world- I love to do the same thing. Great practice and also very rewarding.

Miko and all our other newbies, welcome to Positive Thinkers! Penny is wonderful at inspiring us all in positive thought. I have been much more focused and conscientious since I joined this group. Being encouraged to have positive thoughts creates a positive working attitude and I now definitely get more done!!

Thank you Penny. You are wonderful!!
  • Miko, from one newbie to another, enjoy the ride as you are figuring out what your voice has to offer. Every part of your journey is an different experience savor. Good luck!
  • Aaron - WAY TO GO - what a great idea, reading to kids! Helps all involved, doesn't it?

MiKO - we are so delighted to have you with us. This is definitely the place to be while you are finding your place in the VO world. Let me know if I can help in any way.

    Hugs to all,

    Penny
  • Hi Penny, I joined back in June, but today was the first day that I read your story, and saw so many similarities. I'm beginning a second career, and am presently taking theatre classes and writing for the school paper. I'm doing what is more natural for me, now. It's a relief, and at the same time challenging because it's so new. I'm working with students, both young and old. The key is that I'm doing what I want to be doing.
I really didn't have much to say before, because I was still finding out what I was doing. Now, after a few experiences, I feel more relevant to the discussions.
I can say this, VU does a good job at welcoming newbies, and putting us at ease. I've yet to make a voice demo, or even figure out just what my voice has to offer, but I will eventually. It's true, confidence makes a difference.
    Thanks,
    MiKO
  • I hoped everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving and beautiful weekend. As for me, I start reading children’s books to 1st graders at our local library in mid December to help on my narrations, timing and character skills, I figure any practice is good practice. Also thanks to everyone who sent out holiday greetings, this proves the greatness of this community.
  • May I also encourage those not heading to the black friday sales to take part in "National Day of Listening". This is a project that records oral history of friends, family and loved ones via interviews with home equipment. These can then be uploaded to the StoryCorps website. To find out more check out www.nationaldayoflistening.org.
  • May I just suggest not limiting yourself before you get started. Leave yourself open to what you not only might achive, but what you CAN achive by having faith in yourself. If you limit what you think you are capable of you are much less likely to get out of the box you have put yourself in. One thing I do know about marketing yourself is that you don't want clients to think that you can't do it. One reason radio and voiceover personalities work so well is that clients often don't see them or they can sometimes make a prejudgement on what your ablities are before they've even heard you. I don't know how many times personalities make appearances and the first thing I've heard is "you don't look anything like your voice". Blessings to all the VU crew on this day of Thanksgiving!
  • I don't know, Penny, that jackofallvoices would really put the pressure on by implication. Folks might get to thinking I can do stuff outside my capabilities. I sitll like it too though.....this getting tougher the longer it goes.
  • You know you guys are not helping at all. Now it's even harder with all the new thoughts....aaaarrrrrggggghhhhhh
  • Happy Thanksgiving to all of my American friends.

    I really like Jackofallvoices.com and also Connie's JackinTheBox/Booth.

Good luck with whichever you choose. I am presently going through the same process.
