  • Penny,

Lot's of positive energy headed your way! AND... while in Hartford, if you get a chance to venture into West Hartford, stop at '59'ers on Farmington for the BEST iced coffee east of the Rockies!

  • Hi Penny,
I'm so glad to join your group. I've been a fan of yours and of Jim's for years and have gotten great tips from Jim's How To books. Looking forward to a wonderful and stimulating association.
    Best to you,
    Len Tobin
  • hi penny, take some echinacea as well. it works best if you take it just as the cold is coming on, but still it could help you now. and some zinc as well! sending you love, hugs and healing energy from England! :D
  • Hi Penny-

    Good vibes comin' your way!

    Feel better!

  • Penny,
I am sending you all the positive energy that I can. I am thinking of all the positive energy you give to each of your students so I am trying to return that same level of energy that you gave to me back to you. I am sure that your trip will be a success and you and Jim will have another group of very enthused graduates. But along with all the positive energy, don't forget to take a couple of extra handfuls of vitamin C, three times a day!
    With love and affection,
    Dr. Rico
  • Hey Penny,
I hope you are feeling better. Take lots of Zinc to try and wipe out those nasty cold germs! It works for me!

  • Eric,

Dear man - THANK YOU! First for the healing energy and then for this wonderful post! I know that reading your story will be an inspirations to others.

    Big hugs,

  • Hi Penny,

I'm writing to let you know I'm thinking warm, positive, helpful, healing thoughts for you

I've been meaning for some time now to write a post for this board to share with you and others how similar my journey has been to the story you describe on this page. After a modestly successful community theater career as a younger actor, I settled down into a "normal" career, believing that was what I was "supposed" to do. Over two decades I made quite a bit of money, but never experienced a fraction of the career happiness that I have now. This is not to suggest that my life now is by any means easy, or that the work is by any means steady; but I work, regularly, and have established myself as a credible professional in a career that I love.

The details of my story will come in another post at a later time. However, the gist of it is that I had to separate myself from that old career path and the old way of thinking about myself in order to become what I knew inside I really was all along. Now my motto is, "We become what we believe we are." I think this is why positive thinking is SO important. Negative or positive, our beliefs about ourselves define and shape the reality we create, consciously and unconsciously. My true path began the day I finally said to myself, "I am an actor." Giving myself permission to believe that changed my life, and as a result I am the happiest now that I've ever been.

Of course, that mere statement did not magically transform me of its own force. But once I accepted the initial premise, I began to act like an actor ... doing the things an actor does: Studying, training, auditioning, more training, more studying, more auditioning; researching characters, breaking down scripts, more studying, more training ... and then, booking work!

I offer this comment as a supplement to your story, and as a word of encouragement to anyone out here who wants a career in VO but has been afraid to commit to journey. I believe in the Nike philosophy, "Just Do It!"

A long journey begins with just one small step. The first step is to believe in ourselves. The second step is to commit to our dream. The third step is to ignore anyone or anything, ESPECIALLY the little voice in our head, that says we can't. I found that once these initial steps were taken, all I had to do was just keep moving forward, one step at a time. That was almost four years ago. Today I feel like I'm standing at the top of the mountain, marveling at how far I've climbed!

So, Penny ... thank you for giving me the inspiration to share my thoughts with the rest of our community. I am sending you HUGE waves of healing energy, fueled by my absolute belief in your good health and wellness!! Take care, and be well.
