  • Phlegm, Phlagm

...or for those of you with some 'maturity' Phlegm Pickins.

I need to talk about Phlegm. You know, that nasty stuff 'loogies' are made of; the kind some of your 's-not so nice' friends used to 'hock' and 'hurl'

OK, I'm done. I do have a serious question. As I go through my VO day, I notice that more and more I get a phlegm build up that seems to hang right on my vocal chords. It actually raises the pitch in my voice a noticeable level. The only way I've found that I can clear it, is by some pretty aggressive 'throat clearing'. Problem of course being that aggressive clearing is bad for my throat ... and it's only good for a couple of paragraphs and it's back.

Is there any thing out there (home remedies, throat sprays ... moonshine ) anyone can recommend to solve this problem? Anybody out there even have this problem?

    Thanks

    Ran

p.s. I guess this doesn't exactly walk in step with our 'positive thinkers' group here, but I 'positively' cherish every one of ya and your opinions. Does that help? ;o)
  • Howdy All,
Dan "The Voice" here. A bit about myself. Very similar story to a lot of VO folks. Back in the 3rd grade they picked me to read a quote from Neil Armstrong and the rest is history...always picked to be the spokesperson of groups (usually by default, noone else wanted to), some music theatre, president of school choir, summer stock, morning announcing in HS, etc. Then on to college, started off in Graphic Design then moved to Radio/TV - got my degree in Broadcast Journalism and went to work for my family business in transportation....jump ahead 19 years and I've worked in transportation and marketing and found myself wondering what I was doing...now I'm working for myself, I just finished a masterclass with Such A Voice and have setup my home studio and done a few projects and lovin' every minute of it!! I also do graphic design and websites (if anyone is in need of a new site or a tune-up on an old-outdated site...

I'm currently starting with what I know best, my own voice. But...I'm going to be doing character voices for animation and video games in the future as I practice and perfect my craft!

Yesterday is Gone, Tomorrow is not Written and Today is a Gift! Glad to be here!
    Dan "The Voice" or DTV!
  • I'll see that and raise ya one ;o) Ran

"The Past is dead, and has no resurrection; but the Future is endowed with such a life, that it lives to us even in anticipation. The Past is, in many things, the foe of mankind; the Future is, in all things, our friend. In the Past is no hope; The Future is both hope and fruition. The Past is the text-book of tyrants; the Future is the Bible of the Free. Those who are solely governed by the Past stand like Lot’s wife, crystallized in the act of looking backward, and forever incapable of looking before.

    -- Herman Melville --(1819–1891)
  • Here's one to get your week off to a good start

The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams.

  • Hi all!

Here's a little Food 4 Thought for this weekend.

I began a tradition many years ago that has gotten through some rough patches in my life. I'd like to share it with you. It’s called my “Happy File.”

I collect things that make me happy such as:

A birthday card or thank you note really touches me
A heartfelt note from a friend
A nice performance review or testimonial from a client
A crazy picture of something that makes me grin – say a kitten wearing sun glasses
A drawing from one of my granddaughters (after its life on my refrigerator door, of course)
A particularly touching email (yes, even if it’s the forwarded kind)
A really nice evaluation of a speech I’ve given in Toastmasters
A funny picture of my family or a pet that helps me remember a special memory
A picture of a beautiful forest or seascape

You get the idea. . . I keep the things that make me “happy” when I look at them. I stash them in a file folder and when I’m having one of those days, I simply pull it out and look through it. It’s a wonderful antidote for a dark mood.

Give it a try – let me know if it works for you too.

    Have a great weekend all!

    Hugs,

    Penny
  • Thanks for your story Penny. I'll be 42 in January and I'm soon to be totally self-employed in the voicing industry. It's a really scary venture, but I feel that I'll never really be able to get out there and market myself if I'm committed to a full-time job. It's something I've thought about doing for years, and then chickened out, and then thought about it. Reading your story gave me a much needed pat on the back, and also reminded me that life is too short to think "what if?". Thanks! Kel

  • When I first started to go full steam into all things Voice Over, there was one major statistic I was infomerd about. More of a Mathematical formula to this business one had to keep in mind when facing the constant challenges we all face whenever we put our Voices out there.

The equation is quite simple :

For every 100 VO Jobs out there, 80 of those jobs will only go to 20 of the talent.

So in saying that, one can assume that 20% of the talent will get 80% of the work.

So what about that 20% left over, now the roles reverse. Of the 20% left, the other 80% of talent are now trying to get some of that work, which mathermatically speaking means the rest of the talent has a 25% chance of getting ONE gig.

Sounds pretty glum eh? Well math is brutal sometimes, so how do we make sure we are in the "Right Frame of Mind" so that we can get into the 20% of the talent that gets the 80% of the work?

    Simple . . .

    Never give up. :-D
