    Gotcha! Sounds like you've got a good plan working there!

    One of the great little secrets of our business is that clients are fascinated by what we do. They love hearing about it!!! Giving them a little insight to our world is a great tool to connect with them!
  • Ah....to clarify - my full time job as a police dispatcher here in Melbourne is on a set roster with shifts. So, as a result, I know for the week ahead when I'll have time to devote to the business.

    I'm also working on doing permanent part time, working only Friday & Saturday nights (so I've got a consistent, not too bad income) and the rest of the week is for the business.

    My other thing with the weekly emails is that even if they delete it, they've got it - and won't forget me in a hurry ! I've only had 2 people ever ask to be taken off the list....it's not extensive, but they're my core clients - for now.

    I also reflect the website in the same way, it's ALWAYS up to date.

    Secondly, thank you so much for sharing your strategy! I love that you make it a point to stay in touch with your clients on a weekly basis. That certainly establishes a connection and a relationship.

    I have one question. Would you deliberate a little more on what you mean about "I have a forward roster until 2010 " with reference to your weekly emails?

  • Guys, just thought I'd share a bit about how I get my work...

    I don't work with an agent, and source my own work.

    My modus operandi is to market, market, market - even though we don't have such a big selection of clients here in Oz than the UK/US, there's still enough work.

    I utilise my website (the key), keep in contact with my regular clients (or not so regular) by emails I send out on a Sunday with a bit of a blurb about the week to come, changes to the studio, etc and my availability for the week ahead (my full time job allows me time off during the week mostly, and I have a forward roster until 2010 !).

    I also send out a bi-annual newsletter to everyone on my mailing list so I don't forget them, I got Xmas cards commercially printed with my logo and a message and sent off 2 weeks prior to the big day.

    The amount of work I've gotten through the website as a cold lead (ie, me not chasing it) has been very fruitful, including doing financial advice VO's for a company who produce modules on a weekly basis - at a very decent rate per hour !

    Agents would take 10% of the value of that work if I joined them, and if i'm not readily available (ie work committments) then they'll probably go to the next person on their list (of which they have plenty).

    Absolutely!!! No question about it!!! In this creative group lots of these talents are as comfortable in character voices as they are in straight reads. The secret, I think, is marketing your different strengths in different ways.

    For example, I'm fluent in English and Spanish. I market my Spanish one way. I market my English another way. AND, I market my bilingual capabilities a completely different way.

    The reason for that is simple. Clients that are looking for a particular voice don't want to have to wade through all the other stuff. It takes a bit more work, but it is well worth it!

    One interesting note about the way I market: I have many established clients who are quite surprised to find out that I can do other styles and/or languages. And once I've developed a good relationship with them, for them to find out about this other area of my abilities often opens up new job opportunities!!!

    Certainly the same principle applies for someone like you that can do the Imaging and the Spots, but ALSO can excel in characters! But I still would suggest that you market them separately!

  • I know I have talked before in this thread about doing what your best at, but...can some be good a more then one area of voices overs? The reason I ask is because I know my voice is good for Radio Imaging, TV promos, and spots. But I LOVE to do characters! Can some be successful at doing more then one area of voice acting?
